SPED 110
Minot State University
SPED 110 - Introduction to Exceptional Children was an experiment this
spring semester to help high school students interested in education
professions get a jump start on their college planning and coursework. Our goal
at Minot State University was to reach students interested in future education
majors sooner. We sought to:
1) Prepare students better for their university education by helping them to
decide on their area(s) of interest earlier in their college
Experience (Elementary Ed, Secondary Ed, Special Ed, Communication Disorders,
etc.)
2) Introduce high school students to education professions having critical
shortages nationwide, such as Special Education
3) Inform students interested in critical demand fields about grant and debt
forgiveness programs available to students who would agree to teach in these
areas for a specified length of time
We heard some very positive comments from guidance counselors and other
educators across the state about our initiative, and 9 high school juniors and
seniors with plans to major in elementary or special education enrolled in SPED
110 this spring.
Lori Garnes, the course instructor would like to
offer SPED 110 next spring (Spring 2010) to high school students on the North
Central and Great Western Network for sure. We have students in Turtle
Lake-Mercer, Rugby, and West Fargo in the course this spring. Because SPED 110
is a rather unique course offering, it is open to all high school juniors and
seniors in North Dakota via Interactive Video, but please indicate
on your schedule for your viewers, if possible, that SPED 110 is not generally
awarded "Dual Credit". Most high schools do not have an
"education" curriculum, and treat MSU's SPED 110 course as a
"Dual Enrollment" offering.
The course will begin in Spring 2010 on Wednesday,
January 13, 2010. It will meet each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from
7:45-8:35 am. Please list it on your ITV schedules with your other dual
credit/dual enrollment offerings for next spring. Thank you!
